The examiner reads the five number sequence at a rate of one digit per second. These results have implications for our understanding of visuospatial memory in dyslexia, and also in terms of the administration of the Corsi task to special populations. Forward Digit Span: Administration: The examiner gives the following instructions: I am going to say some numbers and when I am through, repeat them to me exactly as I said them. Our data suggest that, without instruction, people with dyslexia are unable to adopt an effective CB strategy and this is consistent with a deficit in executive function. We present three studies which indicate a consistent dyslexic deficit on CB that can be ameliorated by visual strategy instructions. While people with dyslexia typically show no deficit on CF, CB is rarely presented. It was hypothesized on the basis of past research indicating an age-related decline in central executive performance, that backward digit and spatial span performance would decrease at a greater rate than forward span performance. However, measures of Digit Span Backward require not only rote immediate verbal. Previous research has suggested that, while CF draws on spatial-sequential resources, CB may load executive and distinctly visual processes. Digit spans are commonly used as capacity measures of immediate verbal memory. The Digit Span Forward (DSF), Digit Span Backward (DSB), and Digit Span Sequencing (DSS) process scores permit examination of performance separately on the three parts, as well as discrepancy comparisons among the three parts. In a widely used measure, the Corsi blocks task, sequences of visuospatial locations can be recalled forwards, in the order presented (CF), or backwards, in reverse order (CB). WAIS digit span tops out at 9 forward and 8 backwards IIRC, however there are two trials per item (meaning that to max, one has to successfully complete 6 digit sequences per digit length, with two being forward, two being reverse, and two being sequenced). However, the situation regarding visuospatial memory is less clear. Reynolds (1995) did a meta-analysis of Digit Span tests and found that digits forward and digits backward load on different factors. 93, based on a coefficient known as stratified coefficient alpha. Impairments in working memory are suggested to be one of the defining characteristics of dyslexia, and deficits in verbal recall are well documented. The Digit Span subscale (Digit Span Forward, Backward, and Sequencing combined composite) internal inconsistency reliability has been reported at.
